YouTube thumbnail downloader

Paste any YouTube link. Get every thumbnail size YouTube holds for it, straight from YouTube's own image servers.

What this does

This tool reads the video id out of a YouTube URL and shows you the thumbnails YouTube already publishes for it: maxresdefault at 1280×720, sddefault at 640×480, hqdefault at 480×360, mqdefault at 320×180 and the plain default at 120×90. The images come from YouTube's image host, so what you download is the file the platform serves, not a re-encode. It works on ordinary watch links, youtu.be short links, Shorts links, embed links and live stream links, and it needs no API key, no account and no upload. Not every video has every size: maxresdefault only exists where the uploader supplied a thumbnail at least 1280 wide, which is why an older or a phone-uploaded video may top out at 640×480.

How to download a YouTube thumbnail

    Copy the video link

    Anything YouTube gives you works: the address bar, the Share button, a youtu.be short link, a Shorts link or an embed URL. You can also paste the eleven-character video id on its own.

    Paste it in

    The id is read out of the link as you type and the thumbnails appear underneath. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is sent anywhere: the page builds YouTube's own image URLs and loads them.

    Take the size you need

    Download the resolution you want, or open it in a new tab. Sizes YouTube does not hold for that video are marked as unavailable rather than handed to you as a broken file.

Questions

What is the highest resolution a YouTube thumbnail comes in?

1280×720, stored as maxresdefault.jpg. YouTube only generates it when the uploader supplied a thumbnail at least that wide, so plenty of older videos stop at 640×480. There is no 4K thumbnail: YouTube does not keep one, and anything advertising a 4K download is upscaling the 1280×720 file.

Does this work on YouTube Shorts?

Yes. A Shorts URL carries the same video id as a watch URL, so paste it in and the same set of thumbnails comes back. Shorts are shot vertically but their stored thumbnail is still a 16:9 frame, usually with the vertical video letterboxed inside it.

Is it legal to download someone else's thumbnail?

Downloading one is straightforward, because the file is served publicly by YouTube. Republishing it is a different question: a thumbnail is the uploader's copyrighted work. Using one for reference, for a competitive teardown, or in commentary and criticism is normal practice; passing it off as artwork for your own video is not.

Do you store the links I paste?

No. The video id is parsed in your browser and used to build an image URL that points at YouTube. Nothing about it reaches our servers, and there is nothing to log.

Why does the biggest size show as unavailable?

Because YouTube has no maxresdefault for that video. It is generated from the uploaded thumbnail, so a video whose thumbnail was smaller than 1280×720, or one auto-generated from the footage, will not have it. The 640×480 file is the real ceiling in that case.
